Our People Are Brilliant — They Just Don’t Speak

Walk through any South African taxi rank, spaza shop, hair salon, or informal settlement, and you’ll find it:

Ingenuity. Hustle. Grit. Brilliance.

But for some reason, we’ve built a system where brilliance only “counts” if it shows up in a blazer, speaks English fluently, and comes with a PowerPoint deck.

That’s the lie.

Too many people are excluded from opportunities, not because they lack intelligence or potential, but because they don’t speak the language of the system. Literally and figuratively.

We praise “innovation” when it’s pitched in a boardroom. But ignore it when it comes from a backyard mechanic designing his own tools, or a young mother running a multi-product business off a WhatsApp catalogue.

We call people “unskilled”, but what we really mean is: They’re not certified. They’re not networked. They’re not fluent in middle-class confidence.

But here’s what they are:

  • Strategic thinkers
  • Relationship builders
  • Risk takers
  • Micro-entrepreneurs
  • Creators of value in tough environments

These are the kinds of skills we say we want — adaptability, initiative, resilience. Yet we don’t recognise them unless they come wrapped in corporate packaging.

It’s time to flip the script.

At VukaSpark, we don’t ask people to shrink to fit the system. We ask how the system can grow to recognise the intelligence already alive in our communities.

We believe in:

  • Multilingual brilliance
  • Non-linear learning journeys
  • Real-life CVs written in survival, hustle, and heart

Because our people are brilliant. They just don’t speak corporate. And honestly? Maybe it’s time the corporate world learned to listen better.
